As the theme for this month’s newsletter, Empowerment is crucial to the success of the organization, especially those in middle management leadership positions. It is also what makes an organization a high-performing one. Another related element to high-performing organizations is Teamwork. In their book, "The Wisdom of Teams", Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith create a veritable “how-to” set of ideas on creating high-performing teams.
One of my favorite chapters is Chapter 9 – Teams and Major Change: An Inevitable Combination. In this chapter the authors talk about the importance of people and teams in creating success and desired results through the change process. Whether it is the new culture taking shape from the top down or the new goals being accomplished from the bottom up, empowered people and teamwork are the common crucial elements to success.
