What to Read

This month’s book referral is one I have read multiple times and keep at the ready because it has influenced my leadership philosophy over the years. This is also one of the few books I purchased shortly after hearing the author speak about his experiences around leadership. “Straight To The Top and Beyond" is written by John Amatt who led the expedition that put Canada’s first team on the summit of Mount Everest. The book is an account of the expedition’s trials and successes and how the experience led to his creating a business around helping leaders adapt to change.

Being an adventurer, it only makes sense the philosophy of John’s company “One Step Beyond” would be based around adventure. In Chapter 10 he outlines the nine keys to success pattered after the acronym ADVENTURE (Adaptability, Desire & Determination, Vision & Values, Experience, Natural Curiosity, Teamwork & Trust, Unlimited Optimism, Risk-ability and Exceptional Performance).

Of special note is his definition of Vision including a reference to being adventurous. When you think about the challenges leaders face today, executing their vision can seem much like an adventure!

I also appreciate the analogies from the Mount Everest expedition relative to teamwork. Whether scaling the top of the geographic world or the top of the business world, teamwork makes it happen in its truest sense. As he writes: “When you see one person standing on top of Everest, or attaining any major goal in life, it is important to recognize the contribution of all the people who put him or her there.”

Enjoy the Book!
