I introduced my book recommendation earlier in this newsletter. "Business Process Improvement" by Dr. H. James Harrington has become one of my go-to references whenever I work with organizational improvement with companies and non-profit organizations. It has become a constant reminder of the basic tenets of improving any aspect of an organization whether in the traditional "back office" operations or the "front office" mentioned earlier in this newsletter.
Of special note is Chapter 3, which specifically speaks to effectiveness, efficiency and most importantly, adaptability. Adaptability, I would argue, is the most important operational measurement in today business landscape. While not downplaying the importance of effectiveness and efficiency, I am raising the importance of adaptability as a more crucial measurement. Dr. Harrington's ground breaking book, and specifically Chapter 3, provides the right thought provocation and discussion when he states "..., Good enough is not good enough any more." The solution lies in an organization's ability to adapt. It is as relevant now as it was when he first wrote the book.
Enjoy the Book!
