What to Read

As part of my Leadership Development and Business Coaching practice, I've become very aware of what drives the way we think and the impact it has on our ability to become effective leaders.  That interest took a leap forward when I recently learned that 90% of what we know about how the human brain works we've learned in the last 12 years!  To that end, I came across a book recommended by a client that I want to share with you this month.

Brain Rules by John J. Medina is an excellent book that brings to light many of the key elements of why our brain works the way it does.  For a developmental molecular biologist, Mr. Medina writes in a style we can all relate to and understand so that we can truly learn how long and short our memory really is.  We learn the importance of sleep and exercise relative to our ability to be productive.  Or that multitasking is an impossibility making it even more of a productivity drain.  But the most important part of the book in my mind was gaining a deeper understanding about how we learn.  It introduces how important repetition and using the senses allows us to absorb and retain what we learn so we are more effective in both the classroom and the boardroom.

Enjoy the book!
